Consideration of Special Circumstances

Objective:

Provide team members with an understanding of when and how to assist an IMG in applying for Consideration of Special Circumstances.

STRONG RECOMMENDATION
This is a quasi-legal task and thus we STRONGLY RECOMMEND that Able Medico be engaged to take the lead role. Provide us with a BRIEF email outlining grounds and we will provide an opinion and quotation for consideration. 

Reconsideration, Review and Appeal

Objective:

Provide team members with an understanding of when and how to assist an IMG in applying for Reconsideration, Review and Appeal.

Modules:

  • Understanding of Reconsideration, Review and Appeal
  • Preparing and lodging: Reconsideration, Review and Appeal applications
  • College timeframes for the above
  • Most likely outcomes

Seeking College letters of support

Objective:

Sharing with practice team members when and how to secure College letters of support. 

Modules:

  • Annual AHPRA renewals for IMGs who are NOT Fellows
  • Changes in Supervisor or Supervision Levels
  • Practice changes
  • AON certificate applications
  • Other circumstances


Optional Support:

Practice accreditation

Objective:

Provide guidance to practices regarding College accreditation for AON practices. 

Modules:

  • Explanation of the College AON accreditation process and key criteria
  • Explanation of timeframes

  • Explanation of preparation for College audit
  • How to appeal a decision


Optional Support:

  • Able Medico reviews draft documents AND College feedback to provide guidance

Remediation Training

Objective:

Provide guidance to practices regarding Remedial Training for Doctors impacted by the outcome of College assessments.

Modules:

  • Consideration of Special Circumstances or Reconsideration, Review and Appeal
  • Identifying College compliant Remediation practices
  • Drafting application to College
  • AHPRA changes for Remediation
  • Periodic reviews
  • Completion of Remediation
  • AHPRA changes for return to Practice

Supervisors and Supervision levels

This CHAPTER is identical to that found in the AHPRA room. 

Objective:

Provide guidance to practices regarding rules for Supervisors and Supervision levels. Includes changes to both. 

Modules:

  • Explanation of AHPRA Supervision guidelines
  • Explanation of College Supervision guidelines
  • Explanation of Supervision levels
  • Changing Supervision levels with the College and AHPRA

Frequently asked questions

Which Colleges oversee which specialties? 

You can find this information in the Overview of Colleges (4PR200).

What are the College assessment options?

There are three main assessment options:

1. Short-Term training with AHPRA Post-Graduate training or Supervised Practice registration.

2. Specialist Assessment only with AHPRA Provisional registration.

3. Dual Specialist and Area of Need application with either AHPRA Provisional Competent Authority OR Limited Area of Need registration.

How long do College assessments last? 

Good question. It varies by College so cannot provide a definite answer. 

HOWEVER if you secure the College assessment outcome report it "should" state how long the assessment is valid. 

If NOT make contact with the College to seek clarification.  

What if a Doctor fails their College assessment or examinations? 

The short version is this.

Initial Assessments
Very difficult to appeal as it is largely clinical in nature HOWEVER:

1. many Colleges provide a preliminary outcome report. That provides an opportunity to clarify and provide further information.

2. It is possible to ask for Reconsideration. Refer Reconsideration, Review and Appeal (4PR215).

College Examinations
Two pathways:

1. Consideration of Special Circumstances (4PR210) OR
2. Reconsideration, Review and Appeal (4PR215).

Failed all Examination Attempts
All Colleges have some form of Remediation. Refer to the specific College examination handbook. Refer to Remedial Training (4PR230).
